What we do

Law for Non-profits provides relevant legal education, information and advice to the non-profit sector, which consists of approximately 27,000 societies in BC. Our goal is to build legal supports that will provide sustained access to legal education and information, thereby empowering and strengthening the sector to mitigate the need for more substantial legal intervention.

While there are some legal resources available to the sector, they are largely piecemeal, rarely proactive or strategic, located in cities and not readily accessible. Typically, even a well resourced society has difficulty identifying or predicting potential legal issues. This is where we step in.

Did you know, the non-profit sector is larger than forestry in its contributions to the provincial GDP?

“There is an immense variety of educational resources available online, now more than ever. During these times of change and uncertainty, we have relied on the offerings from the Pacific Legal Education and Outreach Society (PLEO). Their large collection of resources has provided answers on how to navigate new aspects of our society's operations and the legal implications that come with that. We are grateful for the high quality, reliable, easily accessible information, and look forward to future installments of the Legal Lunch & Learns. Our first virtual AGM this October was a big success and our confidence in running it stemmed from the excellent planning resources available from PLEO.”

“I have really appreciated the diverse range of topics that have been presented by PLEO over the past six months. The legal issues that have arisen for charities due to the pandemic have caused a lot of concern for our leadership and board of directors, and your overviews of human rights, employment standards, lobbying and amalgamations have been informative and supportive.”
